TMR launches the first iteration of TMR Academy in Guadalajara. This experimental pedagogical project explores new models of collective learning through a series of artist and curator-designed classes and workshops.

Workshop 1
Media Tactics: Film, Technology and Digital Methods in Artistic Production
Instructors: Matt Lucero and Tuan Andrew Nguyen (The Propeller Group)
July 21 - 22, 2016, 6-10pm
The Propeller Group works at the intersection of contemporary art, mass media, and popular culture to explore complex and interdependent systems of cultural production. Their multimedia work explores politics, ideologies, and power, and how they manifest in the various languages of creative spheres. In this workshop, The Propeller Group will use the medium of the music video as a case study to discuss how critical interventions can happen in visual economies of mass consumption. They will present past projects they have worked on to map an overview of distinct methods from mass media that can be mobilized in art-making. Additionally, they will conduct focused conversations with students about their own work and provide feedback.
Workshop 2
Filming Afrofuturism
Instructors: Erin Christovale and Amir George (Black Radical Imagination)
July 27, 2016, 3-8pm
Students will learn the basics of producing a short film based on the theories and ideologies of Afrofuturism. Utilizing Kodwo Eshun’s essay, Further Considerations on Afrofuturism and selected shorts from the Black Radical Imagination film program, students will develop a short story using elements of folklore and Afrofuturist aesthetics. Students will then form a production team to make a short film based on their story idea.
Workshop 3
Advanced Critique
Instructor: Cesar Garcia
August 16 - 19, 2016, 10am-1:30pm
The format of the group critique has been used in graduate art programs to generate a model of critical dialogue and feedback aimed at strengthening the idea development process in an artist’s practice. In this course students will participate in a group critique and will be expected to speak about and present their work and projects while the instructor moderates a critique with all students in the course. A selection of texts will be given to students to use as a reference for the questions guiding the critique. The goal of this class is to help students strengthen their conceptual practices so they may be better equipped to have productive and learning dialogues during studio visit situations.
Workshop 4
Academic Writing & Public Lectures
Instructor: Cesar Garcia
August 16 - 19, 2016, 3:30pm-5:30pm
This course is designed for emerging art writers and critics and will teach students how to prepare and deliver a public lecture. Working with a selection of video works from the Kadist Collection in Paris and San Francisco, students will be assigned 2-3 video works and will be expected to write and prepare a short critical response that they will then present publicly during the screening of those videos. Students will work closely with the instructor during the week on the editing process but will be expected to do preliminary work before the seminar and to write the first draft of their response before the first day of class. The instructor will assign students video works after enrollment.
About the Instructors.
The Propeller Group is a collective based in Ho Chi Minh City and founded in 2006 by Phunam Tuc Ha, Matt Lucero, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen. Their multimedia works use the languages of advertising and politics to initiate conversations about power, propaganda, and manipulation, especially as they relate to fallen Communist dictatorships and the rapid rise of capitalism in Vietnam and beyond. The Propeller Group's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh (2015) and Grand Arts, Kansas City (2015). A survey exhibition of their work is currently on tour through 2018 at the MCA Chicago, the Blaffer Museum, Houston, and the Phoenix Art Museum. Their work has also been included in a host of major international exhibitions including the Lyon Biennial (2007), the Shanghai Biennial (2010), Made in L.A. (2012), The Ungovernables, The New Museum Triennial (2012); the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial (2012); the Guangzhou Triennial (2012), Prospect 3., New Orleans (2014), the Götenborg Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden (2015), and the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) among others. They have participated in various prominent group exhibitions, most recently, No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY (2013) and Six Lines of Flight, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2012). Their work is in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Carnegie Museum; the New Orleans Museum of Art, LA; the Speed Museum, KY; the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane; and the Singapore Art Museum along with a wide-range of prominent private collections around the world.
Black Radical Imagination is a touring program of visual shorts that delve into the worlds of new media, video art, and experimental narrative. Black Radical Imagination focuses on the aesthetics of Afro-futurism, Afro-surrealism, and the magnificent through the context of cinema. Black Radical Imagination is curated by Erin Christovale and Amir George. Erin Christovale is a curator based in Los Angeles focusing on film/video within the African Diaspora. She graduated with a BA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts and is the curator at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Amir George is a motion picture artist and film programmer born and bred in Chicago. Amir creates work for the cinema, installation, and live performance. His motion picture work and curated programs have been screened in festivals and galleries nationally and internationally. Amir is the founder of Cinema Culture, a grassroots film programming organization.
