Performance: Lament

Performance | Nov. 14, 2018, 7:30pm

This is a past event.

A collaborative experiment in movement and music expands Susu Attar’s exhibition, Isthmus, as an environment to explore the potential for catharsis through art.

About the Performance.

Lament, a performance by Susu Attar, Sheila Govindarajan, and Sandra Lawson-Ndu, marks the first collaboration between these three artists after a long mutual admiration and friendship. Govindarajan and Lawson-Ndu engaged Attar’s exhibition, Isthmus, as a space of loss and healing. Layering voice, image, object, instrumental music, and movement, Lament binds the performers and audience through an emotional, physical journey of communal catharsis.

About the Artists.

Susu Attar (b. 1982, Iraq) is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Los Angeles.  Her work has been included in exhibitions in Montreal, Mexico City, San Francisco, Dubai, and Minneapolis, among other cities. In 2018, she held two artist residencies in Los Angeles: one at The Main Museum, and the other as one of the inaugural participants in the +LAB Artist Residency through the Little Tokyo Service Center. She was also a finalist for the 2018 Los Angeles Artadia Award. Attar's practice extends to theatrical production and exhibition curating. Notably, she is a member of the SEPIA Collective, a women of color art collective whose work includes a traveling exhibition, ICONIC: Black Panther, in which artists respond to the legacy of the Black Panther Party. She has also co-produced and designed Haram, an experimental theatrical production inspired by the poetry of her mentor Dr. Maher Hathout. She holds a BA from San Francisco State University in Painting and Conceptual Information Art.

Sheila Govindarajan is an LA-based artist whose music reflects the multiplicity and richness of the worlds and times she travels. Growing up in a traditional South Indian family, Sheila has developed a style that synthesizes her deep roots with the beats, breaks, and rhythms of her polysonic LA upbringing. Singing in multiple languages and even a language of her own she calls in the flow within lines of improvisation and respect to all the elements.

Sandra Lawson-Ndu is a Nigerian American musician currently based in Oakland CA. As a vocalist and songwriter, she has contributed to and collaborated on a number of live and recorded projects including works with DJ Center (Everything in Time LP) and Nomadic Wax (Diaspora Mix Tape Volume 2), and the "Sorry To Bother You" soundtrack, Currently she is co-leading the band Bells Atlas, who in addition to working on their own music, write original music for the WNYC Snap Judgement tour. She’ll be releasing her solo material, titled Chew FuFu, in 2019.
