About the Performance.
Christopher Myers leads a walkthrough of his exhibition with friends and collaborators Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman. A meditative exploration of artworks in the exhibition manifests through improvisational voice and dialogue—giving way to an experimental performance that also functions as an exhibition walkthrough.
About the Artists.
Christopher Myers (b. 1974, US) is an artist and writer based in New York. While he is widely acclaimed for his work authoring and illustrating literature for young people, he is also an artist and maker whose work has been included in a host of exhibitions and cultural projects around the world. Myers has collaborated with traditional shadow puppet makers in Jogjakarta, silversmiths in Khartoum, conceptual video artists in Vietnam, musicians in New Orleans, woodcarvers in Accra, weavers in Luxor and many other artists who he sees as all being part of a large conversation about the movement of culture. Myers’s collaborations are fueled by an interest in the way that languages are borrowed globally and traded from South to South in order to address specific local concerns of people that have been thrust into contexts that range far beyond their locality. His work has been exhibited at PS1/MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, Prospect Biennial in New Orleans, and Contrasts Gallery in Shanghai. Myers has also curated exhibitions in Vietnam, designed theater that has travelled from PS122 in New York City to the Genocide Memorial Theater in Kigali, Rwanda, and collaborated with artist Hank Willis Thomas on a short film, Am I Going Too Fast, which premiered at Sundance. Myers participated in the Whitney Independent Studio Program. He has also written a host of essays for exhibition catalogues and for publication such as The New York Times. He is currently working on a book comparing global censorship methodologies.
Saul Williams (b. 1972, US) is a rapper, singer, songwriter, musician, poet, writer, and actor, who released his debut album, Amethyst Rock Star, in 2001. After gaining global fame for his poetry and writings at the turn of the century, Williams has performed in over 30 countries and read in over 300 universities, with invitations that have spanned from the White House, the Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center, The Louvre, The Getty Center, Queen Elizabeth Hall, to countless villages, townships, community centers, and prisons across the world. He gained a BA from Morehouse and an MFA from Tisch, and has recorded with Nine Inch Nails and Allen Ginsburg, as well as countless film and television appearances.
Anisia Uzeyman (b. 1975, Rwanda) is an actress, playwright, and director. She studied drama at the Superior School of Theater in France. Anisia has written and directed four plays and recently starred in the award-winning film, Tey / Aujourd’hui, by Alain Gomis and the feature, Ayiti Mon Amour, by Guetty Felin. Her feature-length debut, Dreamstates, premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2016. She also directed music videos for Sons Of An Illustrious Father ’s “Opposite Of Love”, Saul Williams' “The Noise Came From Here” and Mehdi Cayenne’s “Rivière”. She lives between Paris and Los Angeles.
