Cao Fei: Shadow Plays
Curated by Kris Kuramitsu
Opening July 9th, 2015

Opening Reception:
Thursday, July 9, 2015, 7-9pm

The Mistake Room is pleased to present Cao Fei: Shadowplays, the Beijing-based artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Cao Fei creates universes in her work-surrealist dystopias and fantastic utopias that highlight a wide-range of social frictions and contradictions. Shadowplays will encompass two newly conceived installation environments for the presentation of two of Fei's ambitious recent projects-Haze and Fog and RMB City. Widely different, Fei's projects share an interest in tracing the intensities and peculiarities of contemporary urban life to their ultimate, if absurd, conclusions. Haze and Fog (2013) is a zombie film set in present-day China, a fable of economic and cultural alienation among the burgeoning middle class living in the capital city of the world's most populous nation. The exhibition will also feature videos that capture aspects of the complex RMB City project (2007-2011), a virtual metropolis developed by Cao Fei's avatar, China Tracy, within the game Second Life. RMB City became a site for experimentation and collaboration where the historical, simulated and real mingled, all in the wake of the global economic collapse. Cao Fei dives headfirst into popular, typically playful forms, like horror films and computer gaming, immersing us in these worlds of pure invention to generate a critical platform to consider our current moment.
